5 card stud poker - Gameplay &
strategy
Unfortunately, there are a number of drawbacks of five-card
stud, unless played for high stakes, namely that there
isn’t much scope for a whole lot of strategy to
enter the game play.
Five-card is only exciting if there are substantial
possibilities and opportunities to bluff. This usually
requires rules that permit large betting, as is the
case in no limit Poker.
Without high stakes and lots of bluffing, there will
be many relatively uninteresting hands with lots of
folding. High numbers of hands may go completely uncontested,
even by good players. Those that are played are often
whittled down to two players, with little or no raising.
Therefore, a whole evening of 5-card stud can often
prove boring.
If you are playing with people who absolutely insist
on playing five-card stud, there are three suggested
variations, which can be used in order to add some spice
to the game:
1. Deal the last card down. This greatly increases
the bluffing opportunities, and makes scare cards amongst
the up-cards valuable.
2. Allow players to replace one card after the final
card has been dealt. This will keep people interested
enough to make them call in the earlier rounds. As more
players stay in, the pot odds will improve, and you
can stay in more often.
3. Raise the antes so that the initial amount of money
in the pot is enough to make it worthwhile seeing another
card.
If none of these techniques seem to appeal your stick
in the mud fellow players, there is one final option
– find another Poker game.
